Google Changed Review Rules in 2026 (And You're Probably Violating Them)

In April 2026, Google updated review rules silently. No announcement. No email. The rules just changed.

If you're collecting reviews the way most North Carolina businesses do, you're probably violating policy right now. Worse: Google is actively removing non-compliant reviews and can suspend your profile.

Full Transparency: I Was Doing This Too

Here's the thing. I ran Skinny Wheels Bike Shop in Salisbury for 14 years. Until 2024, I was doing everything Google just banned.

I had a POS system that would text customers after they paid asking if they were satisfied. If they said yes, it automatically sent a second text with a Google review link. That's review gating. It's now against policy.

I also noticed Yelp and other platforms actually rewarded you for getting reviews from customers who checked in or visited while in your business. So I thought I was playing by the rules. Turns out, I wasn't.

I'm not bringing this up to excuse what I was doing. I'm bringing it up because if I was doing it, and I'm someone who pays attention to this stuff, then probably you are too.

The practices weren't evil. They worked. But Google decided they crossed a line between "asking for honest feedback" and "steering customers toward positive reviews." And honestly, they're right.

Why This Isn't Just an Update. It's a Crackdown

Google removed 292 million policy-violating reviews in 2025. That number shows you how serious the company is about this.

Seventy-one percent of consumers trust online reviews when deciding whether to do business with you. Reviews are critical for local visibility and ranking. But Google's enforcement is getting smarter. Their AI-driven moderation is now catching violations at scale and removing reviews in batches.

If you violate the policy repeatedly, Google doesn't just remove reviews. It restricts your profile. Your visibility drops. Competitors who play by the rules outrank you. And recovery takes months.

This isn't theoretical. It's happening right now.

Five Common Practices That Are Now Against Policy

          Review Quotas.

If you've told your team "we need 10 new reviews this month" or run leaderboards for who gets the most reviews, that's now explicitly banned. Staff can't be required to hit review numbers. The goal is natural, organic growth, not quotas.

Asking for Specific Names or Content.

You can't ask customers to mention a specific employee or service in their review. You also can't write review templates and ask customers to use specific wording. This was always against policy but Google is now actively enforcing it with AI detection.

          Review Gating.

This is filtering customers by sentiment before sending a review link. The typical setup: customer visits, they get a feedback request. If they respond positively (4-5 stars), they're directed to Google. If they respond negatively (1-2 stars), they go to an internal form. This is now being actively enforced. Google sees it as manipulation, and they're right.

          On-Premises Review Requests.

Asking for reviews while customers are still in your business is prohibited. This includes verbal requests at the counter, review kiosks, tablets in the waiting area, or any in-store setup where customers leave reviews on your device. The logic makes sense to businesses (capture them before they leave), but Google sees it as pressure.

          Incentivized Reviews.

Offering discounts, free products, loyalty points, gift cards, or any other incentive for leaving a review is banned. This includes offering incentives to revise or remove negative reviews. You also can't use AI to write reviews for customers, even if they approve them.

How to Ask for Reviews (The Right Way)

Here's what's still allowed. Simple, open-ended requests work perfectly.

Send an email or text after the customer has left your business. The message should be straightforward: "Would you mind leaving us a Google review?" That's it. No incentives. No pressure. No specific wording.

If you want to prompt them, use a single neutral question like "What would you tell a friend about your visit?" Let them write in their own words.

Ask every customer equally. Don't filter by whether you think they'll be positive. Don't skip customers who seemed unhappy. Ask everyone the same way, and you're compliant.

Then do the thing most businesses forget: respond to every review, positive or negative. Reply within 24 to 48 hours. Thank people for positive feedback. Address legitimate complaints on negative reviews. This pattern tells Google's algorithm you're a real, engaged business.

Never write reviews for customers. Even if they say "just write it and I'll approve it," that violates policy. AI-generated reviews get flagged and removed in batches now.

Why Google Is Cracking Down (And Why It Actually Helps You)

Google's goal has always been an authentic, trustworthy review ecosystem. Consumers rely on reviews to make purchase decisions. If reviews are manipulated, the whole system breaks down.

For years, businesses found workarounds. Review quotas, gating, templates, on-site kiosks. These tactics generated reviews that technically came from real customers but still manipulated the process. They worked. That's exactly why Google is cracking down.

Here's the counterintuitive part: playing by the rules actually builds better long-term reputation than gaming the system ever did. Natural, organic reviews convert better than artificially inflated 5-star profiles. Honest feedback builds genuine trust. And trust is what actually drives business.

When everyone was doing review gating, the businesses that didn't look suspicious. Now that Google is enforcing, the honest players have an advantage.

The Real Cost of Getting Caught

Your reviews get removed. Even legitimate ones mixed in can disappear as Google's AI cleans up your profile.

Your review profile can be restricted or suspended entirely. Your visibility on Google Maps and Search drops. Competitors who follow the rules outrank you.

You lose customer trust. When people see your reviews got removed, they wonder what you were hiding.

Recovery takes time. Rebuilding a restricted profile can take months or longer.

This is why you need to audit your process today.

          Audit Your Review Process Today

Check your current process against these questions.

Are you or your staff asking for reviews while customers are still in your business? Stop doing it immediately.

Do you have review quotas or leaderboards for staff? Delete them.

Are you offering incentives for reviews? Remove that policy.

Are you asking customers to mention employees by name or use specific wording? Update your process.

Then implement the compliant version. Ask all customers equally via email or text after they leave. Use open-ended language. Respond to every review.

If you're using a POS system with automated review requests, check the timing. If it's triggering while customers are on-site or immediately after payment before they leave, that's on-premises solicitation. Change the timing.

The new reality is simpler but requires more consistency. Ask less aggressively. Ask more carefully. Reply to everything. That's the pattern Google's algorithm reads as a real business.

Not Sure If Your Review Process Is Compliant?

How a Custom Work Order System Transformed My Bike Shop (And Why Your Service Business Needs One)

I ran a bike shop for 14 years using a custom work order system. Here's how it transformed our workflow and why any service business needs one.

How 14 years behind the counter taught me that the right system changes everything for a service business.

Before I opened Skinny Wheels Bike Shop in Mocksville, I spent several years working in the web development department at Food Lion's corporate headquarters. Part of that job involved using an enterprise work order system that the company had paid a substantial amount of money for. The interface was clunky and the learning curve was steep, but the underlying concept was solid: every request got a ticket, every ticket had a status, and nothing fell through the cracks.

When I opened the bike shop, I kept thinking about that system. Not the expensive version, but the idea behind it.

For the first couple of years, we did what most small service businesses do. Paper tickets. A customer would bring in a bike, we'd fill out a handwritten work order, attach it to the bike, and send it to the back. Simple enough in theory.

In practice it was a mess.

Tickets fell off bikes. Tickets got mixed up between bikes. When a customer called to check on their repair, someone had to physically walk to the back, find the bike, read the ticket, and relay the information. And figuring out what to work on next meant physically going through every bike in the queue, checking the date on each ticket, and mentally sorting the order. Every single day.

The bigger we got, the worse it became.

          Finding the Right Solution

I eventually discovered a free, open-source work order system that looked remarkably similar to the expensive enterprise tool I'd used at Food Lion, minus the painful interface and the enormous price tag. I set it up for the shop, configured it to match our workflow, and we never looked back.

What we built was essentially a custom digital work order system tailored specifically to how a bike shop operates. When a customer brought in a bike, our front desk service writer would open a ticket and enter everything: customer name, phone number, email, what they were bringing in, what they wanted done, any special notes. The customer would automatically receive an email confirmation the moment the ticket was created.

From that point on, they could follow the progress of their repair online without ever having to call us.

          What Changed Almost Immediately

The queue was visible to everyone at once. The techs in the back had the system open on a dedicated computer. At a glance they could see every open ticket, sorted by when it came in. No more walking through bikes. No more guessing what came first. The oldest tickets were at the top. Priority tickets, for customers who paid to have their work expedited, could be flagged and moved up automatically.

As techs worked through tickets they'd add notes directly in the system. Parts on order. Customer contacted. Waiting on approval. Work completed. Every step was documented in real time, with a timestamp attached.

Communication became automatic. As long as we had a good email address, customers were notified when their ticket status changed. Most of the "where's my bike?" phone calls stopped almost entirely. Customers already knew.

          The Benefits We Didn't Expect

Efficiency was the obvious win. We stopped losing tickets, stopped missing work, stopped working things out of order. That alone was worth it.

But over time we started realizing benefits we hadn't anticipated.

Every closed ticket became part of a permanent record. After a few years of operation we had a searchable history of every repair we'd ever done. When a customer came in six months later claiming we were supposed to have done something, or that a repair we'd done hadn't held up, we could pull the closed ticket and show them exactly what had been requested and exactly what had been done. Not from memory. From documentation.

          That changed conversations entirely.

There was also an unexpected knowledge base effect. Techs would leave detailed notes about how they'd solved unusual problems. Over time those notes became a reference library. When a similar issue came in, someone could search past tickets and find how we'd handled it before. Institutional knowledge that used to live only in people's heads started living in the system instead.

This Isn't Just for Bike Shops

I share this story because what we built at Skinny Wheels isn't unique to bike shops. The same workflow applies to any service business that takes in customer requests, assigns them to staff, and needs to track progress from open to closed.

HVAC companies managing service calls. Auto shops tracking repairs. Electricians juggling multiple job sites. Plumbers handling emergency calls and scheduled maintenance. Appliance repair businesses. Lawn care companies. Anyone who operates with a queue of work and a team to do it.

If your current system is paper tickets, a whiteboard, a shared email inbox, or just whoever answers the phone remembering what needs to get done, you already know the problems. Things get missed. Work gets done out of order. Customers have no visibility. Staff have no documentation. And when something goes wrong, there's no record of what was actually agreed to.

A custom work order system fixes all of that.

If you're a small business owner, you've probably heard about Wix, Squarespace, or Website Builder. Maybe you've already used one. They're affordable, they look decent, and you can have something live in a weekend. We get it. When you're running a business, fast and cheap sounds pretty good.

The Stat That Should Stop You Cold

Before we go any further, consider this:

81% of consumers research a business online before making a purchase.

That's not a small percentage. That's basically everyone. And here's the kicker:

roughly 70% of all website traffic comes directly from Google.

So if Google isn't showing your website to people, it almost doesn't matter that your website exists.

Google Is Running a Game and It Sets All the Rules

Here's the best way we know how to explain SEO to a business owner who doesn't live in this world every day.

Think of Google search results like a game show. There are rules, there are judges, and there are winners. The winners get shown on page one. Everyone else, page two, page three, page four and beyond, might as well be invisible. Studies consistently show that page one captures the overwhelming majority of clicks. Most people never scroll past it.

Google is the host of this game, and Google gets to decide every single rule. What makes a website rank. What makes it trustworthy. What makes it relevant to someone searching in your area. And Google updates those rules sometimes hundreds of times a year.

The question for your business isn't whether you have a website. The question is whether your website is playing by Google's rules.

What DIY Platforms Do Well (And Where They Stop)

We want to be fair here, because we're not in the business of misleading people.

Wix, Squarespace, and similar platforms have gotten genuinely better in recent years. They handle the basics: mobile responsiveness, basic meta tags, connecting to Google Search Console. For a brand new business that just needs something online, they can work.

But here's what the data actually shows about these platforms:

          They hit a ceiling.

Advanced technical SEO, full control over schema markup, custom URL structures, complex redirect rules, performance tuning, is either limited or requires workarounds that most business owners don't know exist. One industry analysis put it plainly: the real issue isn't whether a DIY site can rank, it's whether it can scale. What works when you're just starting out often becomes the thing holding you back two or three years later.

          You're locked in.

           Many website builder platforms are

closed ecosystems. Your site lives on their servers and cannot be exported. If you ever decide to move to a better platform, you're not migrating. You're starting from scratch. And a bad migration can destroy years of SEO work overnight.

The cost of the wrong decision isn't today's price tag.

It's the rebuild cost, the SEO re-ramp, and the customers you lost to a competitor while you were stuck on a platform that wasn't built to grow with you.

The Hidden Cost Nobody Talks About

Here's a scenario we see all the time.

A plumber in Lexington builds a Wix site. It looks clean. It has their phone number and a list of services. They're proud of it, and honestly, they should be. They built it themselves.

But when someone in Lexington searches "emergency plumber near me" at 10pm on a Tuesday, that plumber doesn't show up. A competitor who invested in their online presence does. The referral the plumber got from a happy customer, the one who told their neighbor "use Mike, he's great," that neighbor Googled the business name, found a site that didn't inspire confidence, and called someone else instead.

Mike never knew. He still thinks word of mouth is working great.

That's the hidden cost. You don't see the calls you didn't get.

What Actually Moves the Needle on Google

Since Google sets the rules, let's talk about what those rules actually care about:

          Local signals.

For a service business, Google wants to know you serve a specific area. That means location-specific content, a properly optimized Google Business Profile, and local keywords woven throughout your site, not just on the homepage.

          Technical foundation.

Page speed, mobile performance, proper site structure, schema markup that tells Google exactly what kind of business you are. These aren't optional extras. They're the baseline for being competitive.

          Content that answers real questions.

Google rewards websites that genuinely help people. A plumber who has a page answering "how much does water heater replacement cost in Lexington NC" is more likely to rank for that search than a competitor whose site just says "we fix plumbing."

          Consistency and trust signals.

How long has your site been around? Are your business details consistent across the web? Do other credible websites link to yours? Google is essentially asking: is this a real, trustworthy business?

Most DIY platforms give you some control over some of these things. But control, knowledge, and ongoing strategy are three different things, and most business owners don't have time for all three.

          So What Should You Do?

If you already have a Wix or Squarespace site, we're not telling you to blow it up tomorrow. Start by understanding where you actually stand. What are you ranking for? What are your competitors ranking for that you're not? What technical issues is your site carrying that you don't know about?

At PathPoint Services, we offer a free website assessment that answers exactly those questions. No jargon, no pressure, just a clear picture of where you are and what's keeping you off page one.

If you're starting from scratch, the platform decision matters more than most people realize. We build websites that are designed for SEO from day one, not as an afterthought.

Either way, the first step is knowing what game you're playing. Because Google's been keeping score whether you knew the rules or not.

Why Davie County Businesses Have a Hidden Advantage Online (And Most Don't Know It)

I live in Mocksville. My business is registered here. And I'm a member of the Davie County Chamber of Commerce.

So when I say what I'm about to say, I'm saying it as a neighbor; not as someone trying to sell you something from across the state.

Most Davie County businesses are leaving serious money on the table online. And ironically, the very thing they think is a disadvantage, being in a small market, is actually their biggest opportunity.

          The Wrapped Truck Problem

If you're a trades business in Davie County, there's a good chance you've invested in a wrapped truck. Maybe two. You did it because you wanted people to see you driving around town, on job sites, at the hardware store, pulling into neighborhoods. Smart move.

But here's the thing. That wrapped truck is great for name recognition. The problem is most people aren't going to remember the name correctly, let alone the phone number or web address they saw driving by at 45 miles an hour. What they WILL do is go to Google later and search "plumber in Mocksville" or "AC repair near me." If your name pops up and they recognize it, great. But if you don't have a digital presence, they're going to find the next closest thing. And that next closest thing just took your customer.

Your website is your truck driving around Google 24 hours a day, seven days a week, reaching people you'll never drive past. The difference is most trades businesses in this area have either no website, a one-pager with a phone number, or something they threw together on Wix years ago and haven't touched since. That's not a criticism; it's an opportunity for the business that decides to do something about it first.

Small Town Doesn't Mean Small Competition; It Means Less of It

Here's what I've observed about the Davie County market. If you're an electrician, a plumber, an HVAC company, a roofer, or any flavor of contractor in this area, you're probably competing against a handful of other local businesses for the same customers.

Now think about what happens when someone new moves to Mocksville, and people are moving here, and they need an electrician. They don't know anyone yet. They don't have a neighbor to ask. They go to Google and type "electrician near me" or "electrician Mocksville NC."

          Who shows up?

In most small markets like ours, the answer is not many local options. Sometimes it's a big directory like Thumbtack or Angi. Sometimes it's a company from Statesville or Winston-Salem with a landing page. Sometimes nobody shows up at all. That's the hidden advantage. The bar is low. The competition is thin. And the business that shows up professionally, with a real website, a verified Google Business Profile, and some basic SEO, can own that local search space for years.

What a Facebook Page Won't Do For You

A lot of trades businesses around here rely on a Facebook page as their online presence. Facebook is great for what it is; staying connected with existing customers, sharing photos of completed jobs, getting referrals from people who already know you. But Facebook doesn't replace a website.

When someone searches Google for an electrician in Mocksville, your Facebook page probably won't show up. Google wants to send people to websites, specifically to Google Business Profiles and websites with real content about real services in real locations. A Facebook page is rented space. A website is property you own.

          What We've Seen Firsthand

We recently built a website and set up a Google Business Profile for a trades business in the area. Before we started they had no web presence at all; nothing for potential customers to find, nothing to show up in local searches, nothing working for them while they were out on jobs. Now they have a professional foundation in place that works 24 hours a day whether they're on a job site or not.

That's what a real online presence does for a trades business. It doesn't replace word of mouth and referrals; it amplifies them. When someone gets a referral and looks you up, what do they find? That answer matters more than most business owners realize.

What to Do If This Resonates

If you're a trades business in Davie County and your online presence isn't where it needs to be, here's the honest truth. You don't need anything complicated. You need a professional website that clearly explains what you do and where you do it, a verified Google Business Profile with accurate information and real photos, and basic local SEO so Google understands who you are and where you serve.

That's it. No complicated strategy, no monthly ad spend. Just a solid foundation that works for you while you're out doing the actual work.

What 14 Years in Salisbury Taught Me About Getting Found Online

A Salisbury business owner shares what 14 years in the local market taught him about web design, visibility, and what small businesses really need online.

How 14 years as a Salisbury small business owner shaped everything I now do for my clients.

When I moved Skinny Wheels Bike Shop from Mocksville to Salisbury in 2013, I thought I had it figured out.

I'd already been running the shop for two years. I knew my customers, knew my products, and honestly knew more about websites than most small business owners ever will. I spent five years in the web development department at Food Lion before going out on my own. I'd built sites. I understood how they worked. I figured that was enough.

          It wasn't.

Not because I lacked the knowledge - I had plenty of that. The problem was time. Running a bike shop means you're on the floor, with customers, managing inventory, handling repairs, training staff, and doing a hundred other things that only you can do. The website kept sliding to the bottom of the list.

When I did get to it, I'd crank out something quick just to have something up. Half-baked content written in a hurry, already a week behind on what I actually wanted to say. The message I was putting out there didn't reflect the business I was actually running.

And in Salisbury, that matters more than people realize.

Salisbury Is a Different Market Than People Think

When I was in Mocksville, being visible was important but the market was smaller and the options nearby were limited. Salisbury is different. It's a larger market with more competition, more options, and more businesses fighting for the same customers. If someone searches for what you do and your website looks outdated, or worse - doesn't show up at all - they move on. There are too many other options for them not to.

          Visibility isn't a nice-to-have in a market like Salisbury. It's survival.

I learned that the hard way. Not catastrophically - the shop did well. But I always knew there was more business out there that we weren't capturing because our online presence wasn't doing the work it should have been.

What Corporate Taught Me That Most Small Businesses Never Learn

Those five years at Food Lion's web development department taught me something that took me a while to apply to my own business: quality content, consistently maintained, is what separates businesses that get found from businesses that don't.

A corporate website has a team. Someone owns the content calendar. Someone writes the copy. Someone publishes the updates. Someone checks whether it's working.

A small business owner has themselves. And themselves is usually already stretched thin.

The answer isn't to work harder on your website. The answer is to have someone handle it who isn't also trying to run your business at the same time.

That's obvious in retrospect. It took me running my own shop for years to really internalize it.

Why Trades Businesses in Particular Are Leaving Money on the Table

If you're an HVAC company, an electrician, a plumber, or any other trades business in the Salisbury or Rowan County area, I want to be direct with you: your online presence is probably your biggest untapped opportunity.

Most trades businesses get by on word of mouth and referrals, which is great until it isn't. Referrals dry up. Seasons change. And when a homeowner in Salisbury has a pipe burst at 9pm and searches for an emergency plumber, they're not calling someone their neighbor mentioned three years ago. They're clicking the first result they trust.

          Is that you?

If you're not sure, that's probably your answer.

What PathPoint Does Differently

I started PathPoint Services because I've been on both sides of this. I've been the small business owner who knew better but couldn't execute because I was too busy running the actual business. And I've been the web professional who understood what quality looks like at scale.

PathPoint is built for businesses like the ones I spent over a decade serving in Salisbury - local, independently owned, serious about what they do, and ready to stop leaving visibility on the table.

We're not an agency in Los Angeles with a Salisbury landing page. We're based in the NC Piedmont, we understand this market, and when you call us you get someone who's actually been where you are.

If you're a small business in Salisbury or Rowan County and your website isn't working as hard as you are, let's talk.

Over the past month, my daughter Charleigh and I have run 52 free website assessments for service businesses across North Carolina.

Plumbers, electricians, HVAC companies, landscapers, waste management companies… you name it.

And here's what surprised me: it's not the businesses with ugly websites that struggle. It's the ones making these three specific mistakes.

Most have decent-looking sites. Some even paid thousands for professional design. But they're still not getting customers from their website and here's why.

MISTAKE #1: You're Invisible in the Markets You Actually Serve

You serve Charlotte, but your website is optimized for Huntersville. You cover the greater Wilmington area, but you only rank for "Southport." I see this in about 30% of the assessments we run.

Let me show you what this looks like in practice. A waste management company in Southport came to me frustrated because their competitors were getting more business and they couldn't figure out why. Their website looked professional. Their services were solid. Their prices were competitive but when I pulled the numbers, here's what I found:

"Wilmington dumpster rental" - 480 searches per month

"Southport dumpster rental" - 20 searches per month

"Wilmington junk removal" - 390 searches per month

"Southport junk removal" - 10 searches per month

They were invisible for 96% of the searches in their own market.

This isn't just a Wilmington problem. I see it constantly across North Carolina:

            Huntersville contractors missing Charlotte searches

Mooresville HVAC companies missing Lake Norman searches

            Davidson plumbers missing Charlotte searches

Here's why this happens: You're physically located in the smaller town, so naturally you optimize for that town. You put "Huntersville HVAC" in your page titles. You write "Serving Huntersville and surrounding areas" on your homepage.

But your customers don't search that way. When someone in Huntersville needs an HVAC repair, they don't Google "Huntersville HVAC." They Google "Charlotte HVAC" because that's their mental map of the region.

Google doesn't automatically connect the dots. Just because you're a Huntersville business doesn't mean you'll rank for Charlotte searches. You have to explicitly tell Google, and your customers, that you serve the Charlotte market.

          The fix is straightforward:

Update your homepage to say "Serving Charlotte, Huntersville, and the greater Lake Norman area"

Revise your meta descriptions to include both your town AND the metro area

Create a service area page listing all the communities you serve

Update your Google Business Profile service area to include the larger metro

I covered this problem in depth in my last post, including exactly how to update your Google Business Profile and create location-specific content. You can

          read the full breakdown here

          .

This means you're missing 80-95% of potential searches in markets you already serve.

MISTAKE #2: Your Website Overwhelms Visitors (And Your CTAs Don't Work)

Your site looks expensive. Lots of animations, sliding carousels, fancy graphics. But when I land on it, I have no idea where to look or what to do next.

Then when I finally find the "Contact Us" button... it's broken.

I tested contact forms and CTAs across those 52 websites. A surprising number had broken contact forms, CTAs that went nowhere, or made me hunt just to figure out how to get in touch.

And the photos? Either blurry cell phone pictures that look unprofessional, or obvious stock photography of people who clearly don't work for your company. I've seen pages with a blurry cell phone photo of the actual truck next to a stock image of a model in a hard hat who's clearly never held a wrench in her life. The whole thing just looks... off. Like you couldn't decide if you wanted to be authentic or professional, so you did both badly.

Designers focus on "looking professional" instead of "converting visitors." They add complexity thinking it looks more premium. But overstimulated visitors just leave.

          Here's what I see constantly:

Auto-playing videos that slow down the page

Rotating hero images with 5 different messages (pick one!)

Buried contact info (I shouldn't have to scroll to find your phone number)

Forms that require too much information before someone can even talk to you

CTAs that say "Learn More" instead of "Get a Quote" or "Schedule Service"

Contact forms that simply don't work

The fix is simpler than you think:

Clear headline above the fold - what you do, for who, in what area

One primary CTA above the fold - "Call Now" or "Get Free Estimate"

Phone number visible at the top of every page

Test your forms - actually fill them out yourself and make sure they work

Simplify ruthlessly - remove anything that doesn't help someone decide to contact you

Use real photos of your team, your work, your trucks - even phone photos are better than fake stock images

Simplify ruthlessly - remove anything that doesn't help someone decide to contact you

Even the traffic you do get will bounce if they're confused or your contact form doesn't work.

MISTAKE #3: Your DIY Platform Is Working Against You

You built your site on Google Sites, Wix, or basic WordPress because it was free or cheap. Now you're wondering why you're not ranking.

I see this pattern constantly: Business owner builds their own site, it looks decent but doesn't rank, they spend months tweaking settings, it still doesn't rank, and eventually they reach out for help.

Often, the platform itself is the problem.

DIY platforms struggle because of limited technical SEO capabilities, slower load times (especially on mobile), restrictive templates that hurt mobile optimization, and an inability to implement proper schema markup. I've even found sites where the template code still had a completely different business name buried in it because the owner didn't know how to fully customize the template. Google Sites is the worst. It was built for companies to share internal documents with employees, not for businesses trying to show up when someone Googles 'plumber near me.

This one's harder to fix because it often means rebuilding, but here are your options:

Migrate to a proper platform (we use Duda for clients, but even properly hosted WordPress works)

Hire someone who knows how to properly optimize your DIY platform

At minimum: test your mobile speed using

           Google PageSpeed

Insights and fix what it flags

You're fighting with one hand tied behind your back. Your competitors on better platforms will outrank you even with better content.

          The Pattern I See

Most struggling websites have at least two of these three problems. Some have all three.

The good news? All three are fixable.

You don't need a total redesign or a $10,000 rebuild. You need better keyword targeting for your actual service area, simpler design with working CTAs, and a platform that doesn't fight against your SEO efforts.

          Check Your Own Site

Not sure if your site has these issues? Here's a quick self-audit:

          Location Keywords:

           Pull up

          Google Keyword Planner

. Compare search volume for "[your town] + [your service]" versus "[nearest big city] + [your service]". If there's a 5x or bigger difference, you're missing searches.

          Visitor Experience:

Ask someone not in your industry to visit your site and tell you what you do? Where you serve? How to contact you? If they hesitate on any answer, you have a clarity problem.

          CTAs:

Actually fill out your own contact form. Call your own phone number. Does everything work? Is it easy?

          Platform Performance:

           Run your site through

          Google PageSpeed Insights

. If your mobile score is under 50, your platform is hurting you.

A waste management company in Southport, NC came to me frustrated. Their competitors were getting more business, and they couldn't figure out why. Their website looked good. Their services were solid. Their prices were competitive.

          Then I ran the numbers.

The problem wasn't what they were doing. It was what they were saying.

           480 searches per month

           The gap was massive.

People weren't searching for Southport services. They were searching for Wilmington services.

In some cases, 39 times more searches.

And their website? Optimized completely for "Southport."

          Here's Why This Happens

It makes perfect sense when you're running a business. You're physically located in Southport, so naturally you optimize for Southport. You put "Southport Waste Services" in your page titles. You write "Serving Southport and surrounding areas" on your homepage.

But your customers don't think that way.

When someone in Southport needs a dumpster, they don't Google "Southport dumpster rental." They Google "Wilmington dumpster rental" because Southport is part of the greater Wilmington area. That's their mental map of the region.

Google doesn't automatically connect the dots.

Just because you're a Southport business doesn't mean you'll rank for Wilmington searches. You have to explicitly tell Google and your customers that you serve the Wilmington market.

This Isn't Just a Southport Problem

I see this pattern all over the North Carolina Piedmont:

           Huntersville businesses missing Charlotte searches

Mooresville businesses missing Charlotte/Lake Norman searches

           Cornelius businesses missing Charlotte searches

           Matthews businesses missing Charlotte searches

           Davidson businesses missing Charlotte searches

Any time you have a smaller town that's part of a larger metro area, this gap exists. And your competitors who figured this out are capturing that traffic.

The Fix Is Simpler Than You Think

You don't need to pretend you're in Wilmington (or Charlotte, or wherever). You just need to make it clear you serve that market:

          1. Update your homepage copy

Change "Serving Southport and surrounding areas" to "Serving Wilmington, Southport, and the greater Brunswick County area."

          2. Revise your meta descriptions

Include both your town AND the metro area: "Professional waste services in Wilmington and Southport, NC."

          3. Create a service area page

List all the communities you serve, organized by the major metro area.

          4. Update your Google Business Profile

Make sure your service area includes the larger metro, not just your immediate town.

          5. Build location-specific content

Write about serving the greater metro area. "Dumpster Rental Services Across Greater Wilmington" performs better than "Southport Dumpster Rental."

          Check Your Own Numbers

If you're in a smaller town near a bigger city, pull up Google Keyword Planner or any SEO tool and compare search volumes:

           [Your town] + [your service]

           [Nearest metro] + [your service]

If there's a 5x or 10x difference in monthly searches (or in this case, 39x), you're leaving money on the table.

Not sure if you're missing searches in your market?

If you're running a trades or service business and someone's pitching you on building a custom app, you probably don't need it. I know that's not what most agencies will tell you, but here's the truth:

Why Business Owners Think They Need Apps

I get it. Apps feel modern. Professional. Like what the big companies do. You see a national chain with an app and think, "Maybe that's what I'm missing."

Plus, every third marketing pitch includes "mobile app development" like it's automatically the next step after you get a website.

But here's the thing most agencies won't tell you:

for the vast majority of small businesses, especially trades and service companies, an app is a solution looking for a problem.

The Reality of Building an App

          Let's talk numbers:

           A basic custom app: $15,000 - $50,000+

           Ongoing maintenance: $500 - $2,000/month

You need both iOS and Android versions

Updates every time Apple or Google changes something

You have to convince customers to actually download it

           And here's the kicker:

          your customers won't download it.

Think about your own phone. How many local business apps do you have on there? Your bank, maybe a restaurant loyalty program, probably some national brands. But your plumber? Your electrician? The guy who fixed your AC last summer?

People Google you when they need you. They're not downloading an app to call for an emergency repair or schedule a tune-up.

          When Apps Actually Make Sense

I'm not saying apps are always wrong. There are legitimate use cases:

           Frequent repeat usage

            - Coffee shops with loyalty programs, gyms tracking workouts

           Offline functionality

            - Field service businesses that need to work without cell service

           Real-time notifications that drive business

            - Think delivery tracking or appointment reminders that actually get opened

           Complex customer portals

            - Subscription services managing recurring maintenance contracts

Notice what's missing? One-time service calls. Emergency repairs. Most of what trades businesses actually do.

Even for the exceptions above, you can usually build that functionality right into a mobile-responsive website for a fraction of the cost.

          What Actually Works Better

Here's where you should put that $25,000 instead:

           A fast, mobile-friendly website

that loads in under 3 seconds and looks great on phones

           Local SEO

so you show up first when someone searches "emergency plumber near me" at 10pm

           Google Business Profile optimization

            with reviews, photos, accurate hours

           Conversion optimization

            - clear calls to action, click-to-call buttons, simple contact forms

This is what gets you customers. Not an app sitting unused on 47 phones.

When someone's water heater bursts, they're not opening your app. They're frantically Googling for help. You need to be the first result they see, with a phone number they can tap immediately.

          The Bottom Line

I ran a business for 14 years before starting PathPoint Services. I understand the pressure to "keep up" with technology and competitors. But I also learned the hard way that shiny doesn't always mean effective.

Your job isn't to have the most modern tech stack. Your job is to get found by customers who need your services, and make it easy for them to hire you.

For most small businesses, that means a great website and solid SEO. Not an app.

I don't push apps or flashy stuff you don't need. Just what gets you customers.
